Fabulous Friday-Frozen Treats
Fabulous Friday is a way to recap the week and give you some frugal tips for the weekend. Please share what you’re up to this weekend! Molly
This week was unusually hot in our part of the country and my children ate their fair share of popsicles and ice cream. That got me thinking about all things frozen, summer treats and different ways we all deal with the heat. My oldest has a snow cone maker and she loves to make snow cones for all her siblings (and even cousins!). We’ve tried different flavoring methods from the store bought flavorings to kool-aid mixtures. We also have some popsicle molds that we like to experiment with and make our own frozen treats. Over the years we’ve done everything from juice, lemonade, yogurt/fruit smoothie combinations to kool-aid. We’ve also started making our own ice cream (there are many methods to do this) mostly because we found it cheaper and to be a healthier alternative.
Recently I read about making popsicles for dogs. They get hot too, right? Check out this sight for some easy, practical ideas on making your furry friend a frozen treat. DIYlife also has some “cool” ideas for doggy frozen treat ideas.
What types of frozen treats do you enjoy or make for your family during the summer months? Do your plans for the weekend involve hanging around home, pool or other source of water?

Here’s a recipe I love that came with the Donvier Ice Pop Molds:
Chocolate Quik-Pops
1 can (385 mL) 2% evaporated milk
1/3 cup chocolate syrup
1/2 tsp vanilla
In pitcher, combine evaporated milk, chocolate syrup and vanilla. Pour into Donvier® ice pop molds. Cover and put wooden sticks in place. Freeze for 3 to 4 hours or until firm. Makes 8 servings.
I found, by accident, that my kids enjoy eating frozen fruit almost like popsicles! I can thrown a bag of blueberries or cut up a banana or whole strawberries or pineapple chunks….possibilities are endless and toss it in the freezer then on a hot day hand a few out to the kids – reaction they have is similar to giving them popsicles but I know they are much healthier!
I make yogurt drops. Just take any yogurt you like…put in a ziploc bag and cut small end of one corner and use as a piping bag. Just make quarter size drops and freeze…put 5-10 each in a snack size bag. Even my big kid (hubby) loves them!!!!!
Saundra – out of curiosity have you ever tried making the yogurt drops with fresh or dried fruits? Just interested to see if they would turn out the same or not….I tend to buy plain yogurt so I can add my own mix-ins and didn’t want to have to run out & buy additional yogurt to attempt to make them. Thank you.
