Flashback Molly Monday

July16

My kids have been after me this summer to make ice cream in a coffee can. We actually have one of those fancy ice cream makers but haven’t unpacked it yet from our recent move. While I try hard to get our kitchen unpacked and organized, the kids continue to have homemade ice cream on their mind. I was reminded of this alternate method of homemade ice cream from the July 2010 edition of Molly’s Money Saving Digest (this is an awesome experiment!).

Ice Cream in a Coffee Can
Did you know that you don’t need an electric ice cream maker to make homemade ice cream? This is one of the coolest experiments I have ever been a part of! All you need is a large coffee can, a small coffee can, and all the ingredients for making ice cream and you will have yourself a yummy summertime treat!

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla (If you want to make it a different flavor, such as chocolate or strawberry, simply add in
one tablespoon of flavored syrup.)

1 large (3-pound) coffee can
1 small (1-pound) coffee can
Ice
Coarse salt

Directions:
Make sure that both coffee cans are clean. In the smaller coffee can, mix together the milk, sugar, vanilla, and flavored syrup. Put the lid on and make sure that it is secure. (It wouldn’t hurt to wrap some duct tape around the lid, just to make sure!) Place the smaller coffee can inside the larger one. Begin to add ice and salt around the inside of the larger coffee can. Fill it all the way up until the ice is completely surrounding the
smaller can. Place the lid on the larger coffee can. Now this is where the fun begins! Take the coffee can and roll it around on the floor for thirty minutes. Make this into a game by rolling it back and forth between you and a friend, or maybe your brother or sister.

There some other great experiments/recipes in this edition of Molly Magazine such as: homemade bubbles, play dough and “oobleck.” Do you know what oobleck is? If not, be sure to check out this issue and find out! Are you new to menu planning or just need some new ideas? This issue also has a week’s worth of menu plans to help you organize and stay within your grocery budget. Check here to see what else this amazing summer issue has to offer! Molly members will be able to find this back issue in your member pages at no cost to you. That’s our way of thanking you for being a Molly member!
